The University and Location
The Grieg Academy is a high-caliber music conservatory based at the University of Bergen, an internationally recognized public university located in the city of Bergen on Norway’s Southwestern coast. The Grieg Academy offers Loyola students studying Jazz Performance or Classical Performance the opportunity to experience living in Europe while continuing their studies at an international conservatory with full-time and guest faculty from across Europe and the US, many of whom teach in English.

With a population of 235,000, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, known for its natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene. The city center is compact and surrounded by mountains and fjords.

Academics
This program is for Jazz Performance or Classical Performance students only.

Courses
Loyola students at the Grieg Academy will enroll in courses for the international diploma in performance or composition. Students are also able to take some undergraduate courses outside of music.

Undergraduate courses outside of music can be found here: http://www.uib.no/en/education/50052/courses-exchange-students

All jazz and classical faculty are capable of teaching in English so students’ classes would be in English.  The website above with non-music courses includes courses taught in English at the University of Bergen. The courses are full-year courses, but Loyola students can enroll for one semester.

Language Courses
Students can study Norwegian as part of the program or in a pre-semester class in July: http://www.uib.no/en/lle/30674/norwegian-language-courses

Credits and Grading
Courses are typically one-year courses for 30 ECTS credits (15 credits at Loyola) and incorporate content that is normally included over several courses at Loyola. Loyola students can enroll for one semester and receive 15 ECTS credits per semester (7.5 credits at Loyola).
