Study Abroad Grants and Scholarships


There are a number of grants and scholarships for study abroad. We have listed some of the most well-known grants and scholarships. Please note that you may be eligible for more than one grant or scholarship. For more information about grants and scholarships and help with applications, please make an appointment for advising.  

Loyola Grants and Scholarships


McCay Program Scholarship
Loyola students from the College of Music and Media and the College of Business that are applying to the Loyola Summer Program in Ireland and the Loyola Summer Program in Paris are eligible to apply for the McCay Program scholarship.  Eligible, chosen recipients will receive a portion of, or all of the outlined program costs (excluding airfare/spending money). Apply online at https://studyabroad.loyno.edu/?go=mccayApplication Deadline: February 1

LaNasa Scholarship
Awards for Loyola students in the College of Arts and Sciences for Loyola Faculty-Led summer programs up to the cost of the program! Apply online at https://studyabroad.loyno.edu/?go=LaNasaScholarshipApplication Deadline: February 1

Kendall Daigle Scholarship for Study Abroad
Kendall Michelle Daigle was a Loyola English major with a concentration in writing who passed away in spring 2014. Her parents, Daniel J. and Michelle C. Daigle, created the Kendall Michelle Daigle Memorial Endowment for English to inspire students with the memory of Kendall’s creative talent and vision for peace. A portion of the endowment may be used for scholarships for English majors to study abroad. Applicants participating in long-term programs will be given preference. Apply online at https://studyabroad.loyno.edu/?go=DaigleScholarshipApplication Deadlines: January 15 for Summer, Fall and Academic Year. September 1 for J-term, Spring and Calendar Year (Spring-Fall). 

BK Robertson Scholarship for Study Abroad
BK Robertson, B.A. '02, established this need-based scholarship in 2021, in gratitude for the profound effect that studying abroad had on her life and career. Eligibility: Must be a current Loyola University New Orleans undergraduate student. Must have financial need. Must have applied to a Loyola-sponsored exchange or faculty-led education abroad program for which Loyola tuition is charged in J-term or Summer 2024. Must be in good standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application. Must not have been awarded a BK Robertson Scholarship for Study Abroad previously. Application Deadline: October 15 for J-term or February 1 for Summer. 


General Scholarships and Grants for Study Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Fall application window is late August to 1st Thursday in October; Spring window is late January to 1st Thursday in March
J-term, Fall, Spring, and Summer awards up to $5,000. Eligibility: MUST receive a Pell Grant. The Gilman promotes diversity in Study Abroad--diversity of the applicant, diversity of the destination, and/or diversity of the subject studied. Application Deadlines: First Thursday in March and first Thursday in October. (Check deadlines and timelines here.)

Gilman-McCain Scholarship for Study Abroad
J-term, Fall, Spring, and Summer awards up to $5,000. Eligibility: Must be an undergraduate who 1) is a child dependent of an active duty military service member, AND 2) receives any type of Title IV federal financial aid (including Pell grants, SEOG, Perkins loans, Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans, etc.). Application Deadlines: Rolling application deadlines. 

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarships
Fall, Spring, and Summer grants up to $10,000 for study abroad . Eligibility: U.S. citizenship, undergraduate, Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution. Application Deadlines are typically in January/February and September.  

The Passport Portal
The Passport Portal (TPP) foundation is offering to cover the cost and expenses associated with obtaining a U.S. passport for qualifying students. In addition, TPP will also provide vital information and scholarships when they are starting their study abroad journey. Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university in the United States; 2.5 GPA. Application Deadline: January 31. 

Hostel International USA Scholarships
Due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, HI USA's scholarship programs are currently on hold.  Please subscribe to the HI "Programs & Events" mailing list to be alerted when they relaunch again!
The "Explore the World" travel scholarship is need-based, for educational or service related travel outside the U.S. that incorporates education, volunteerism or service learning. Eligibility: U.S. citizenship, low income or Pell Grant recipient, minimum program length: 7 days. 

Project GO Scholarships for ROTC Students
Project GO is a nationwide program open to all qualified ROTC students offering fully-funded opportunities in critical language education, overseas study, and cross-cultural experience. Through Project GO, future military officers develop linguistic and cross-cultural communication skills required for effective leadership for all Services in the 21st century operational environment. Since 2007, Project GO has provided approximately 6,500 students with opportunities to study culture and 19 languages, both domestically and abroad in 33 countries around the world. Eligibility: U.S. Citizens in ROTC.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships 
Academic-year scholarships of up to $25,000 sponsored by the Rotary Foundation. Contact the New Orleans Rotary Club to begin the Ambassadorial scholarship application. Eligibility: Year-long study abroad. Contact Rotary Club for additional requirements.

Magis Exchange Scholarships
Planning to Study Abroad through the Magis Exchange program? Accommodation scholarships are available to qualified incoming Magis students at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia), Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (El Salvador), Munich School of Philosophy (Germany), XIM University (India), Ibero Puebla (Mexico), Ibero Leon (Mexico), and Loyola Andalucia (Cordoba, Spain). Meal scholarships are available to qualified incoming Magis students at Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (El Salvador) and Universidad Rafael Landívar (Guatemala).

LewerMark Study Abroad Scholarship
Two $1000 scholarships. Eligibility: All full-time students currently enrolled at a Post-Secondary US institution who will study abroad in the Spring or Summer of 2023. Deadline: January 31.

 

Country- and Region-Specific Scholarships

Freeman-ASIA 
Freeman-ASIA awards up to $3,000 per summer, $5,000 per semester, or $7,000 per year for study abroad in Asia. Eligibility: Open to U.S. citizens studying in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam for a summer, semester, or year. Deadline: March deadline for programs running the following academic year. 

Bridging Scholarship for Japan 
Bridging Scholarship recipients receive $2,500 per semester of $4,000 per year for study abroad in Japan. Eligibility: Open to U.S. citizens studying in Japan for a semester or year. Deadline: March deadline for programs running the following academic year. 

Morgan Stanley Scholarship for Japan 
Morgan Stanley recipients receive $7,500 per year for study abroad in Japan. Eligibility: Juniors and Seniors at U.S. universities who will be studying abroad in Japan for an academic year.

JASSO-related scholarships for Japan
The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) website consolidates a number of opportunities in one handy pamphlet. Eligibility: Requirements vary by scholarship. Check the pamphlet linked above for more details. Note: Students studying at Sophia University will receive an email from Sophia with more information when the scholarship opens. 

MEXT Scholarship for Japanese Studies
This scholarship is only available to majors in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture. Students must have at least 1 year in major coursework and demonstrate a Japanese language proficiency of N2 or higher on the JLPT. Note: Students studying at Sophia University will receive an email with more information when the scholarship opens. 

Go Overseas Flight Giveaway for South Korea 
Go Overseas has partnered with Korea Tourism Organization to increase educational tourism to South Korea. They will be giving away a free round-trip flight to one lucky winner to travel to South Korea for educational purposes. Eligibility: Be a resident or citizen of the United States or Mexico; travel to South Korea to study abroad, learn Korean or take a gap year; arrive by December 31st, 2024. Application deadline: June 15, 2023. 

Turkish Coalition of America Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships
The Turkish Coalition of America sponsors up to 100 “Study Abroad in Turkey” scholarships per year for African American, Hispanic American, Native American and some Asian American students. Eligibility: Open to African American, Hispanic American, Native American and some Asian American students studying in Turkey. 

DAAD Scholarship for Study in Germany 
DAAD administers several scholarship programs for programs in Germany. Eligibility: Open to students studying, interning, or conducting research in Germany. 

BUTEX Scholarship for Study in the U.K. 
BUTEX awards £500 scholarships for study abroad in the U.K. Eligibility: Open to students currently registered at a U.S. university who will be studying abroad at a UK university which is affiliated with BUTEX. Please visit the BUTEX website for a list of affiliates.  

Cyril Taylor Memorial Scholarship for Study in the U.K. 
The Cyril Taylor Memorial Scholarship (via Fund for Education Abroad) will award money for Summer (up to $3,750), Fall (up to $5,000), and Academic Year (up to $10,000) Study Abroad programs in the UK. Eligibility: U.S. citizen and undergraduate in credit-bearing programs of of at least 28 days in country. 

Inclusive Ireland Scholarship

Scholarship awards of €3000 for BIPOC students studying at participating colleges and universities in Ireland. Eligibility: Identify as BIPOC, 3.0 GPA, intent to study abroad at one of the participating colleges or universities in Ireland.

 

Scholarships for Language Study


ISEP Annette Kade Fund Scholarship for French and German language learners
The ISEP Scholarship committee awards scholarships between $500–$1,500. Eligibility: Open to students from U.S. ISEP member institutions (including Loyola) planning to study either French or German at ISEP member institutions in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or Reunion Island.

Critical Language Scholarship
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.


Boren Awards
Scholarship awards of up to $25,000. Eligibility: 8-week study abroad or longer (for STEM students); 12-weeks program or longer (for non-STEM students). U.S. citizenship. Awarded for study outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Requires service in U.S. after study abroad. Check deadlines and timelines here.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund 
Offers a variety of scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage. Must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or DACA students to apply. Award amounts and deadlines vary. 

Asia Pacific Fund
Offers a variety of scholarships to students of Asian heritage. Requirements vary. 

Asia and Pacific Islander American Scholarships
Offers a variety of scholarships with award amounts of up to $5,000 for Asian and/or Pacific Islander students. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

NAACP Scholarships
Offers a variety of scholarships of various award amounts. Requirements vary. 

UNCF Scholarship
Offers a variety of scholarships of various award amounts. Requirements vary.

National Italian American Foundation
Scholarship awards of up to $12,000 to students of Italian heritage. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. 

Point Foundation
Scholarship awards of various amounts designated for members of the LGBTQ community. 

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship
The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. Eligibility: Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the United States on a student visa; Be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at a four-year, degree-granting college or university in the United States; Have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university. Deadlines: November 15 for Spring and April 15 for Fall. (Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarships for Summer and J-term not available at this time.) The Going Abroad Scholarship
Scholarship awards of $1,500 from Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights). Eligibility; Open any citizen and/or resident of the United States (and its territories and possessions) who is enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning. Deadlines: March 15 and October 15. Apply online at https://www.going.com/scholarship
