Summer Session of Japanese Languages

Starting this year, June 2013, Sophia University will organize a new, intensive program – the Summer Session in Japanese Language. The six week summer session is for students who want to improve their Japanese language abilities in an intensive program in Japan. Students will study Japanese at the beginner or intermediate level in an international environment at Sophia University, located in the center of Tokyo. Alongside the Japanese language courses, a lecture series, “Japanese Studies,” will provide you with insights on Japanese culture, society, economy and history.


The Program

The program consists of two parts, a Japanese language course and a lecture series on Japanese studies. Every day in the morning, three periods of Japanese language classes are offered (90 classes in total), in the afternoon a series of eight lectures (taught in English) will introduce the participants to important topics of contemporary Japan. The Japanese language courses are divided into three levels, beginners, intermediate and advanced- intermediate, and the class size is about 15 students.

The Location

Tokyo holds both a historical significance and present global relevance that makes for a unique and fulfilling study abroad location. Students on this program will have the opportunity to study at Sophia University while taking in all of the museums, art galleries, historical sites and urban landmarks that help make Tokyo a world-class city.

Courses

The program consists of two parts, a Japanese language course and a lecture series on Japanese studies. Every day in the morning, three periods of Japanese language classes are offered, in the afternoon a series of eight lectures (taught in English) will introduce the participants to important topics of contemporary Japan (5 hours of credit - 4 hours of language credit and 1 for Japanese studies). The Japanese language courses are divided into three levels, beginners, intermediate and advanced- intermediate, and the class size is about 15 students.

Special activities, such as tours, Japanese drumming performances, tea ceremonies, flower arrangements, lectures and films, are held in the afternoons. Information on afternoon activities can been accessed online by following this link.

HousingTokyo Night Lights

Summer students at Sophia University can live in a dormitory off-campus or in one of the hotels with which Sophia has an agreement. Housing reservations can be made through Sophia University. For more information, visit the Sophia University summer session housing page.

 

Meals

Meals are not included in the program price. There is a cafeteria on the Yotsuya campus serving lunch. There are also restaurants (Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, etc.) of all prices ranges near campus. Average cost of breakfast 500 yen, lunch 800 yen, dinner 1,000 - 2,000 yen.

Program Costs

Tuition for the Japenese language summer learning program is 230,000 yen, approximately $2,600.  This price does not include additional expenses such as airfare, health insurance, accommodations, meals, transportation within Japan, the Sophia application deposit (20,000 yen) or the Loyola study abroad fee ($300 U.S.).  See the budget sheet for an estimate of costs.
