Program Description:

Loyola Spain Studies Program 2009

AvilaMurallasCome explore Spain! Ávila, in the heart of Castilla-León, is the home of many of the aspects of Spanish civilization--the bases of the culture in Roman artifacts, early Iberian stone sculptures, Romanesque and early Gothic churches, the original medieval walls that surround the city--all of which make for a wonderful way to improve your skills in the language and learn about Spain's unique culture. Through the Loyola Summer Program in Spain, you will discover the life and history of a lovely provincial capital complete with the local summer fair, concerts, and other interesting activities. The program includes day trips to other exciting locations nearby. The birthplace of Santa Teresa de Jesús, one of Spain's mystic saints, makes Ávila an ideal location to study about Catholic Mysticism as well.

The Loyola Summer Program in Spain consists of four weeks of Spanish language and culture study in Ávila, Spain, during the month of July. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, with day excursions to Segovia and Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, and the Prado Museum in Madrid on Fridays. All classes conducted in Spanish except Spanish Mysticism. The Loyola program is associated with the Universidad Católica de Ávila, where classes are held. Students are housed in one of the student residence halls in town, normally within easy walking distance from the UCAV. Housing with a family is available on a VERY LIMITED basis. Service Learning, working with an organization helping local Spaniards, is an option.

Class Schedule

9 - 11 a.m.: First class (language class)
11: 30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. or 5:30-6:45 p.m.: Second class (either Spanish Culture in Spain or Christian Mysticism).  Additional courses in Spanish literature may be available if enough students are interested.

All classes are taught Monday through Thursday; maximum two classes for six credits.

In addition, all study abroad students must pay the university study abroad fee of $250. This amount will be billed separately through Student Finance.

Avila cated clausAcademic Policies

Loyola's general academic policies apply to study abroad programs. Because of the time frame, students must attend all classes and trips in order to fulfill the requirements for the courses. If any classes or trips are missed, the student's grade will be lowered one grade point. All classes have finals that are traditionally marked.

Students must check with their academic departments or university to determine that the credits and/or grades will be accepted toward graduation requirements at their institution.

Eligibility for this Program:

  • Completion of at least one semester of college Spanish (or the equivalent) before departure, with ability to continue (Minimum of three semesters recommended for full benefit)
  • Loyola student or letter of good standing from your home institution and transcript
  • At least 18 years old

In order to attend the program, students must have a valid passport and any necessary visas. U.S.citizens do not need visas for Spain, but other countries' citizens may need one. Students not holding U.S. passports are responsible for checking with the Spanish Consulate in New Orleans about the necessary visas.

Medical Concerns

Alcazar Castle

The Center for International Education (CIE) will be happy to discuss health care concerns students may have related to study abroad. Because of the particular challenges, both mental and physical, that integration into a new culture and learning environment place on an individual, if a student is currently receiving treatment for any chronic illness it is strongly recommended that he/she talk with CIE staff or a doctor about plans to manage that health condition abroad.

This program includes activities that may involve using public transportation, negotiating stairs, taking long walks, and attending scheduled classes. If any student has concerns about his/her ability to perform any of these activities or has other special needs or disability-related concerns, that person should contact CIE staff at cie@loyno.edu or (504) 864-7550.

Passports and Visas

In order to attend the program, students must have a valid passport, an international student card, and any necessary visas. U.S. citizens do not need visas for Spain, but other countries' citizens may need one. Students not holding U.S. passports are responsible for checking with the Spanish Consulate in New Orleans about the necessary visas.
